How It Works

HOW IT WORKS

Poker Is Better as a Team Sport.

The WPPL Minor League is designed to bring people together through organized, team-based poker competition.

Our goal is to help develop Poker as a sport by creating opportunities for players to compete as part of a team, for team owners to build something meaningful in their communities, and for local operators to bring an organized Poker league to their market.

Whether you’re an experienced player, an aspiring team owner, or someone interested in building a local competition, the WPPL Minor League offers a new way to get involved.

Build a team. Compete with purpose. Be part of something bigger.

1. A Different Way to Experience Poker

Traditional Poker is often viewed as an individual pursuit. The WPPL Minor League introduces a team-based approach built around competition, strategy, sportsmanship, and community.

Players represent their teams in organized competitions conducted under applicable league rules and standards.

The objective is to create a structured environment where individual skill contributes to a larger team effort—and where players, teams, and supporters can share in the excitement of competition.

Our guiding principles include:

  • Team-Based Competition: Players compete as representatives of a team.
  • Skill and Strategy: Emphasis on decision-making, preparation, and competitive performance.
  • Integrity and Fair Play: Competition conducted under established rules and standards.
  • Community Building: Opportunities to bring players and supporters together.
  • Player Development: An environment where players can learn, improve, and pursue their competitive ambitions.

2. How Local Leagues Work

The WPPL Minor League is designed to support organized Poker competition at the local level.

A local league brings participating teams together within an approved competition structure. Each team develops its identity, recruits players, and prepares to compete.

Local leagues are organized and administered by authorized WPPL Minor League Operators, who coordinate the local competition and work to create a consistent experience for participating teams and players.

The specific competition format, schedule, and applicable requirements depend on the approved league structure and governing rules.

The result is a community-oriented competitive environment built around teams rather than isolated individual games.

3. Three Ways to Get Involved

i. Become a League Operator

Want to build something in your community?

A WPPL Minor League Operator organizes and administers an approved local league. The role may appeal to entrepreneurs, poker-industry participants, community builders, and others interested in developing organized team competition.

There are no buy-ins or wagering in WPPL Minor League competition. Chips are used for scoring and gameplay only; they have no monetary or redeemable value.

The program is designed to emphasize skill, strategy, teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive achievement.

Additional participant-facing rules and requirements will be made available through the appropriate league materials.

5. A Local Opportunity with Room to Grow

The WPPL Minor League is intended to provide a lower-barrier for communities to explore organized, team-based Poker competition.

Local participation can help players develop, teams establish their identities, and communities discover a new way to experience the game.

The program may also help participants demonstrate their capabilities and pursue future opportunities as the broader WPPL ecosystem develops.

Any future relationship between the Minor League and the WPPL Professional League will be determined by WPPL and established only through appropriate approval and agreements.

Minor League participation does not guarantee promotion, professional-league membership, professional-team ownership, or any other professional-league rights.
